spindle speeds

Hi guys, My friend have a new trm with a 4000 rpm spindle running single phase in my garage. Today when I was cutting some allum the spindle started to wander about 40 to 60 rpm. It would go from 3300 to 3350 or 3270 (roughly). When I would chenge the spindle spped on the knob it would do the same at the new speed +- 40 to 60. when I ran it at 4000 (with the knob) it seemed solid. what would cause this. Could it just be a voltage surge or something (seperate from my machine) The x and y axis were running fine

Thank author of this post/commentYour vector drive might be going out. I know baldor makes one for fadal machines, but im not sure how much they are. I used to run a fadal at my old job and it did the same thing you were describing. It was a bad motor drive.

I have a trm and had that also. They all do it. I had a tech out from fadal in chatsworth. its not a problem

Thank author of this post/commentMark,

So did you have to replace the vector drive or was it repairable? And at what cost? My Fadal has been playing these games on me for some time now and all I'm able get is a run around from the Fadal service people here! I've got $3500 into a visit from my tech guy, plus parts and one "rebuild" on the drive and still it's farting around with the rpm.

Thank author of this post/commentIf it's a Baldor drive, it may just need to be auto tuned and the factory paramaters reloaded. The spindle motor may need a new encoder. The inverter could be going out. Also, try inputing an m49 in your program if your not already and see what that does.

The M49 is a good test.

You need to check the input voltage at the drive to see if the drive is simply following the command signal voltage. Then work it backwards up the circuit.

Encoder missing pulses could cause rpm variation and other problems when the missing pulse count gets worse.

Call 877-765-9838 for more help, I designed the system... David
