Peeling off damaged plastic layer from control panel

Hello. I would like an experienced professional opinion.A new CNC operator recently complained he could'nt see the buttons on the hardinge control panel(many years old), because the layer of plastic was severly cracked , faded and on the most used buttons (icons)moisture had collected behind the plastic and browned. I peeled

the plactic off revealing a like new panel. One fellow complained that I had removed the "protective layer". My position was that it had outlived it's usefullness and that it should have been peeled off years ago and in fact it was allowing moisture to collect on the panel.There is no convincing the fella who thinks otherwise. I think removal is standard practice in most shops and was a good idea. What do you think? thanks much, ..Bob

If the layer is relatively thin clear plastic then it shouldn't be a problem because a lot of panels are protected this way by the controls manufacturer before delivery. If it was quite thick then possibly is was permanent protection and should be replaced.

Thanks for your feedback. The layer was very thin, quite like the

covering you'd find on a new cell phone or other new electronic equipment. just as I suspected, a big fuss about nothing..again

Machine shops can be quite "fun" at times. Next year marks 35 years for me. Again, thanks for your help, Bob
